Goals and Objectives: The first goal of this course is to teach students the basic concepts and techniques of the visual arts. This instruction will allow students to either pursue the visual arts further, or just give the students a better understanding of art, making the students well rounded individuals. The deeper goals for this course are to provide a safe and healthy environment for self-expression and give the students practice in ‘seeing like and artist,’ a constant evaluation process that trains the mind to see and experience things differently.

Absolutely No: Cell Phones! I will take them up!
                                  Food.
                                  Game or Electronic Devices.
                                  Free time.
                                  Outside class homework.

Tardies & Absences: Don’t be tardy!
Westwood’s procedures for tardies will be followed.
                  3rd tardy= Absence.
More than 10 minutes late= Absence.
                  Tardy= ANNOYING.
I count tardies at the beginning of the bell!!
You must have a signed pass by a teacher or counselor explaining why you are late if you wish to be excused. I have no sympathy for unexcused tardies and I will not repeat instructions missed if no pass is shown!!!

Classroom Procedures: Come in before the bell.
                                                        Place backpacks under table.
Read board for class schedule of events.

Restroom and leaving class: Students are allowed a restroom break when
needed. No more than 1 a day. Only 1 student at a time for not
longer than 5 minutes. Students will not be allowed out of
class for any other reason with out a pass issued by
                                                    destination.

Grading: All assignments will be graded equally. This means No %’s! However, some Long-term assignments will be made of different criterions that will be worth 100pts each.

       The criterions might look like:

*Craftsmanship (100pts.) -Is it presented neatly? Is there attention to detail?

*Following Directions (100pts.) -Did you do what the teacher told you to do?

*Creativity and Effort (100pts.) -Did you do more than the minimum with imagination? Did            you try? Teachers can easily tell when students are not trying.

*Finished Product (100pts.) -Did you complete the project and is it ready to "hang"?

*Artist Statement (100pts.) -Justify and explain your artwork.

A rubric will be given for each long term project.

*Everything we will do is equally important. What you do in your daily work affects your final project. The process of creating Art is just as important as the finished product. So try, try, and try some more!

Critiques: Long-term projects may include a midway critique and a final critique. Critiques will be constructive, positive and for a grade.

Turning Work In & Due Dates: Work will be turned in at the end of class time on the due date. Work will not be considered finished or complete until that time. Sketchbooks will be turned in to the correct class basket. Other work will have specific turn in instructions. Pay attention to those instructions when they are given. Work not turned in properly will not be graded and considered late.

Late Work: There is plenty of class time and open studio time to work! I will not accept unfinished work. Work that is late will be recorded as “missing” (equal to zero) in the grade book if it is not turned in and complete on the due date. Students will be allowed to turn work in for full credit until 5 days after the initial hand back of graded work. A zero will be recorded for work missing after 5 days.
*Students with an excused absence will be given 1 extra day for each class absent to turn in work. When absent, check the blog and website to see what you’re missing. You will need to make up that time outside of class!

Behavior Problems: Detentions will be given if there is a Behavioral
Problem or if a student does not follow the expectations of the class. Detentions will be served during MORNING open studio time. You must have a guardian signature on the detention slip and time which you will serve the detention by the NEXT DAY. Failure to receive signature and time will result in ANOTHER DETENTION. Failure to attend detention will result in A Saturday Detention. More than two detentions is an AUTOMATIC REFFERAL and Parent Contact.
